Lecture capture software change coming Dec. 31

U of T will change its lecture capture software from TechSmith Relay to TechSmith Snagit on Dec. 31, 2018.

University of Toronto (U of T) faculty, staff and students will enjoy greater control of recorded academic content when the University changes its lecture capture software on Dec. 31, 2018.

The award-winning TechSmith Snagit product was selected by Information Technology Service’s (ITS) academic and collaborative technologies (ACT) team as a replacement for TechSmith Relay, which is being discontinued.

Snagit is now available to download on a desktop computer and/or laptop with camera and microphone. Install TechSmith Snagit at: http://its.utoronto.ca/services/202. Your UTORid and password are required.

Currently, hundreds in the U of T community use lecture capture software to record and view lectures and other content, such as assignment instructions, guest lectures, demonstrations and student presentations.

With Snagit, former users of Relay will notice a familiar interface and functionality, plus enjoy more control over recorded files – from creation to posting.

The benefits of Snagit include:

  • Recordings are captured at the user’s computer or laptop.
  • Recordings can be manually uploaded to any, or as many, streaming services, as needed. (i.e., MyMedia, YouTube).
  • Recordings are now written to the desktop or a designated folder on the user’s computer. These files can be copied to a USB key or other drive and retained indefinitely as a personal backup copy.
  • Simple editing tools are available that allow users to excerpt portions of the recording. (Recording using a web camera is optional).

Please note: Currently, Snagit is not compatible with classroom podium computers. To record lectures from a classroom podium, instructors will have to use a laptop with Snagit installed. Future updates about lecture capture on podiums will be shared as they become available.
